Urban Youth and Sexual Health

This week I went to an research event called Urban Youth and the Determinants of Sexual Health put on by the Centre for Urban Health Initiatives and several other partners.  Toronto seems to have a rad group of research that focus on youth, sexual health, participatory action research, and social determinant.

One of the presenters described participatory action research is that it changes the shame and shyness around sexual health among teens and calls it knowledge.  The Toronto Teen Survey is a pretty cool example.  Researcher Roxana Salehi talked about female newcomer youth in Toronto and the barriers/facilitators that affect their ability to access sexual health services.

Several presenters focused on sexual education and sexual health knowledge at Universities in Toronto and it got me thinking about mortality at that level.  I looked online but couldn’t find a report about the health of the University of Toronto’s students.  Anyone else know where I can find this info?

    Kate,
If you are looking for mortality data Ontario Vital Statistics will have deaths by age and cause of death (though that would not help you to know if they are U of T students)and can likely tell you how to access that information.

Morbidity data may be more difficult to come by but CIHI has reports on health indicators which must include morbidity. Maybe try phoning them and asking how you would get that information.

I suspect that information at the U of T level would not be forthcoming because the numbers would be so small that even aggregated data would not be anonymous.
